This is a route that you definitely need to experience at some point in Alicante. It's spectacular, and the entire journey takes about 5 hours, including an hour for lunch. As I completed the whole route, I noticed there are two paths: the easier one leads to Fort de Bernia, while the more challenging one goes to Font de Bernia.

An amazing trail. I would recommend starting from the northern side near the Bernia houses, passing through El Forat, and returning via the southern side in a circular route. This trail is not suitable for children.

The Ruins of Fort de Bèrnia are an impressive fortified complex from the 16th century located in the Sierra de Bèrnia, near Altea. I have been here a few times recently. The site has been excavated and so it gives an impression of what the fort might look like. However, it is also fenced off to avoid disturbance. The location was a great place to eat our sandwiches and discover the view, with the main ridge behind you.

The Italian military architecture in Renaissance style, designed by Juan Bautista Antoneli in the 16th century, is not in the best state of preservation, but the overall structure of the site is still worth admiring. It was active for 50 years before Philip II ordered its destruction to prevent it from falling into the hands of the Moriscos. The walk to this privileged place is definitely worth it to enjoy it in peace.

Great walk up from the Pinos direction. Not at all difficult but some of the best mountain views I have ever seen The fort is a collection of stone ruined arches, not so much, but that isn't why you come here. You can carry on round the mountain and come back to where you started, which is a bit harder, but still not a demanding walk. Update 2025. The fort has been excavated and is now an impressive structure, Well worth the visit. It is astonishing how much was hidden and which has been so quickly exposed.

The fort now has a fence on three sides, and has to be accessed from below. It is fun to see how much more of the ruins have become visible as a result of the excavation.

Great and light hike. The trail is easy and short even if you leave on foot from Altea. Just make sure to chosse a shady day. The place is phenomenal. It is not a well preserved structure and that's exactly what makes it so special. It's mystical and epic at the same time. There ar usually not many people, so you will most likely be alone there. And if you are like most explorers at heart you will have a blast.
