Fort de Bernia, located in the Sierra de Bernia near Altea, is a remarkable historical landmark that dates back to the 16th century. Originally constructed as a defensive fortress to protect the region from Berber pirate attacks, the fort showcases remnants of military architecture designed by Juan Bautista Antoneli. Although the structure is not in pristine condition, the ruins, including sections of walls and arches, provide a vivid glimpse into its past. The fort was active for about fifty years before being ordered to be destroyed by King Philip II to prevent it from falling into the hands of the Moriscos.
The journey to Fort de Bernia is as rewarding as the destination itself. The hiking trails leading to the fort are generally easy, making them accessible for most visitors. Starting from the northern side near the houses of Bernia is recommended, as it offers a scenic route that includes a circular path around the mountain. The hike typically takes around five hours, including a break for lunch, and is particularly enjoyable on cooler days. Along the way, hikers are treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and the Mediterranean Sea, especially during the evening when the landscape is bathed in warm light.
While the fort's ruins are partially fenced off to protect the site, recent excavations have revealed more of its structure, enhancing its historical significance. Visitors often find themselves alone at the fort, allowing for a peaceful exploration of the area. The combination of natural beauty and historical intrigue makes Fort de Bernia a compelling destination for those interested in both hiking and history. Whether you are admiring the remnants of the fort or simply soaking in the panoramic views, this site offers a unique perspective on the region's past and its stunning natural environment.
