How to recognise it
The Spot (Leiostomus xanthurus) is a small, oval-shaped fish. It has a silver body with a distinctive row of black spots along its sides. The spots are usually 5 to 10 in number and are more prominent in younger fish. The dorsal fin is long and has a slight curve, while the mouth is small and located at the front of the head.
It is often confused with the Croaker (Micropogonias undulatus). The key detail that separates them is the presence of the black spots on the Spot, which the Croaker lacks.
Where it lives
The Spot is primarily found along the Atlantic Coast of the United States. Its range extends from New Jersey to Florida, with significant populations in the Gulf of Mexico. They inhabit estuaries, bays, and coastal waters. The Spot prefers shallow waters, typically ranging from 10 to 30 feet deep.
During the warmer months, they move into shallower areas, often near sandy or muddy bottoms. In colder months, they tend to migrate to deeper waters to avoid low temperatures.
When it bites
Spot are most active from April to October. They prefer water temperatures between 65°F and 80°F. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to catch them, as they are more likely to feed during these hours.
Weather changes can affect their behavior. A passing front may increase their feeding activity, while strong winds can make them less active. A full moon often leads to increased feeding, making it a prime time for anglers.
How to catch it
To catch Spot, use a simple bottom rig with a small hook, typically size 1 to 2. A 10 to 15-pound test line is recommended. Baits such as bloodworms, shrimp, or cut bait work well. Use a 1/0 to 2/0 hook for best results.
Cast near sandy or muddy bottoms, especially around structures like piers or jetties. Retrieve slowly, allowing the bait to sit on the bottom. If using lures, small jigs or spoons in bright colors like chartreuse or pink can be effective. Work them with a steady retrieve, varying the speed to find what the fish prefer.
Size, age and the table
Most Spot caught by anglers range from 8 to 12 inches in length. A trophy Spot is typically considered to be over 14 inches. They grow quickly, reaching maturity in about 2 years and can live up to 5 years.
Spot are known for their good eating quality. They have a mild flavor and firm texture. When handling, be gentle to avoid damaging their delicate skin. For catch and release, use wet hands and minimize air exposure to ensure their survival.
