How to recognise it
The Misty Grouper (Hyporthodus mystacinus) is a robust fish with a stout body. It typically exhibits a brownish or grayish coloration with lighter spots. The fins are rounded, and the tail is slightly forked. The mouth is large, with a prominent lower jaw. One key feature is the presence of a distinct dark stripe running from the eye to the upper jaw. This species is often confused with the Gag Grouper (Mycteroperca microlepis). The main detail that separates them is the Misty Grouper's more elongated body shape compared to the stockier Gag Grouper.
Where it lives
The Misty Grouper is primarily found in the western Atlantic Ocean. Its range extends from North Carolina to Florida and into the Gulf of Mexico. This species prefers rocky bottoms, coral reefs, and ledges. It typically inhabits depths ranging from 50 to 300 feet. During warmer months, Misty Groupers may move shallower, while in cooler months, they tend to retreat to deeper waters. They often seek shelter in crevices and under ledges, providing protection from predators.
When it bites
Misty Groupers are most active from late spring through early fall, particularly from May to October. They prefer water temperatures between 70°F and 85°F. The best times to fish for them are during dawn and dusk when they are more likely to feed. A passing front can trigger increased activity, while strong winds may make them less aggressive. A full moon can enhance their feeding behavior, leading to more successful catches during this time.
How to catch it
To catch Misty Groupers, anglers should use bottom fishing rigs such as a standard dropper loop or a fish finder rig. Recommended baits include live pinfish, squid, and cut bait, typically in sizes ranging from 4 to 8 inches. Lures such as jigs in bright colors like chartreuse or pink can also be effective. Use a strong line, ideally 50 to 80-pound test, with a hook size ranging from 5/0 to 8/0. Cast near rocky structures or ledges and work the bait by slowly lifting and dropping it to mimic natural movement.
Size, age and the table
The typical size of a Misty Grouper caught by anglers ranges from 10 to 30 inches, with larger specimens considered trophies at over 30 inches. Growth rates vary, but they can reach maturity at around 3 to 5 years of age. The lifespan of a Misty Grouper can exceed 20 years. They are known for their excellent eating quality, with firm, white flesh. When handling, use wet hands or gloves to minimize slime loss, and when releasing, do so gently to ensure survival.
