How to recognise it
The Yellowedge Grouper (Hyporthodus flavolimbatus) is a robust fish with a distinctive appearance. It has a large, elongated body that can reach up to 36 inches in length. The coloration is primarily a dark brown or gray with bright yellow edges on the fins, which is a key identifying feature. The mouth is large and slightly protruding, equipped with sharp teeth. This species is often confused with the Gag Grouper (Mycteroperca microlepis). The one detail that separates them is the yellow edges on the fins of the Yellowedge Grouper, which are absent in the Gag Grouper.
Where it lives
The Yellowedge Grouper is primarily found in the southeastern United States, particularly in the Gulf of Mexico and along the southeastern Atlantic coast. It prefers deep waters, typically inhabiting depths ranging from 200 to 1,200 feet. This species is often found near rocky bottoms, ledges, and reefs, where it can find cover. Seasonal changes can affect its habitat; during warmer months, it may move to shallower waters, while in cooler months, it tends to retreat to deeper areas.
When it bites
Yellowedge Grouper are most active from late spring through early fall, particularly from May to October. The ideal water temperature for catching them is between 70°F and 85°F. They are known to bite best during the early morning and late afternoon. Weather conditions can influence their feeding behavior; a passing front or strong winds may trigger increased activity, while a full moon can lead to more nocturnal feeding.
How to catch it
To catch Yellowedge Grouper, anglers should use heavy tackle due to the fish's size and strength. Recommended rigs include a standard bottom rig with a 6/0 to 10/0 circle hook. Baits such as live pinfish, squid, or cut bait are effective; sizes should be around 4 to 8 inches. Bright colors like pink or chartreuse can work well for lures. Anglers should cast near rocky structures or ledges and work the bait by slowly bouncing it along the bottom. A slow retrieve is often more effective than a fast one.
Size, age and the table
Typically, anglers encounter Yellowedge Grouper in the range of 10 to 30 pounds, with larger specimens considered trophies at 30 pounds or more. The growth rate is relatively slow, with some individuals reaching maturity at around 4 to 5 years of age. The lifespan of this species can exceed 20 years. Yellowedge Grouper is known for its firm, white flesh, making it a desirable catch for eating. Proper handling is crucial; use wet hands or gloves when releasing them to minimize stress and injury.
