Nature endowed Cartagena with a privileged port, the origin and driving force of the city's life since its founding in the 3rd century BC. This port has been a crossroads for numerous civilizations and the setting for important historical moments. The city's designation in the 18th century as the headquarters of the Mediterranean Maritime Department led to the creation of the naval base and the Arsenal, as well as all the necessary infrastructure for its logistics and defense. Among these, the coastal batteries protecting the entrance to the bay, the walls, and the castles defending the naval base and the city from the heights of the surrounding mountains stand out. Throughout its history, the port has adapted to the needs of each era, and today, after the last renovation at the end of the 20th century, it has three docks: - The military dock, where the Arsenal, naval base, and shipbuilding facilities are located. - The commercial dock, divided into three activity zones: commercial traffic is concentrated at the San Pedro dock; Fishing activity is concentrated at the Santa Lucía dock, while the Alfonso XII dock is dedicated to sports and leisure activities, including the cruise ship terminal where numerous ships and floating resorts make stops to visit the city. In the Escombreras basin, industrial activity is concentrated, with its large petrochemical complex. In addition to enjoying the port of Cartagena by strolling along the esplanade where the monumental sculpture "El Zulo" stands, a tribute to the Victims of Terrorism; the Old Yacht Club; and the "Whale's Tail" in the old Boat Basin, you can also take a pleasant walk along the Blue Trail, which connects the Royal Yacht Club with the beautiful Cala Cortina Beach, just 5 km away.
