How to recognise it
The Golden Tilefish (Lopholatilus chamaeleonticeps) is a striking species. It has a long, slender body that can reach up to 36 inches in length. The coloration is a vibrant yellow to golden hue, often with a blue or greenish tint on the back. The fins are bright yellow, and the tail is deeply forked. The mouth is large, with sharp teeth, and the eyes are prominent.
This species is often confused with the Blueline Tilefish (Caulolatilus microps). The key detail that separates them is the presence of a distinct blue stripe along the body of the Blueline Tilefish, which the Golden Tilefish lacks.
Where it lives
Golden Tilefish are primarily found in the western Atlantic Ocean. Their range extends from the Gulf of Maine down to Florida and into the Gulf of Mexico. They inhabit deep waters, typically between 200 and 1,200 feet. They prefer rocky or sandy bottoms where they can find cover among structures like reefs and wrecks.
In the summer months, they may move to shallower depths, while in winter, they tend to go deeper. Seasonal changes in temperature and food availability influence their depth preferences.
When it bites
Golden Tilefish are most active from late spring through early fall. The ideal water temperature for fishing them is between 65°F and 75°F. They tend to bite best during the early morning and late afternoon. Weather changes, such as a passing front or strong winds, can affect their feeding patterns. A full moon may increase their activity, making them more likely to bite.
How to catch it
To catch Golden Tilefish, use a combination of bottom fishing rigs. A common setup is a dropper loop rig with a 6/0 to 8/0 hook. Use heavy monofilament or braided line rated for at least 50-80 pounds. Baits like squid, cut fish, or live bait are effective. Aim for baits that are 6 to 12 inches long.
Cast your rig to the bottom and allow it to settle. Slowly reel in with a steady motion, occasionally pausing to mimic the movement of prey. Look for structure on the bottom, such as reefs or wrecks, as these are prime spots for Golden Tilefish.
Size, age and the table
Anglers typically encounter Golden Tilefish in the 10 to 20-pound range, though larger specimens can reach up to 40 pounds. A trophy Golden Tilefish is generally considered to be over 30 pounds. They grow relatively quickly, reaching maturity at around 3 to 4 years of age, with a lifespan of up to 15 years.
The flesh of the Golden Tilefish is white, firm, and has a mild flavor, making it highly sought after for eating. Proper handling is essential to maintain quality. If releasing, minimize stress by using circle hooks and handling them gently to ensure survival.
