The origin of the Hospital of Charity dates back to 1693, when the galley soldier Francisco García Roldán established a congregation dedicated to caring for the sick in a house in the outskirts of San Roque, moving in 1709 to Charity Street. Although in 1922 the project for a new hospital in the Los Barreros neighborhood, with a capacity for about 125 beds, was approved, construction did not begin until May 1929, and the transfer of patients to the new facilities took place during the Civil War. In 1723, Brother Francisco Irsino brought from Naples the image of the Virgin that resides today in the church, which soon gained great devotion among the people of Cartagena, to the point that it was invoked in 1789 and 1821, when severe droughts plagued the fields. The Virgin was also prayed to en masse during a cholera outbreak in 1850. The first church of the Hospital was completed in 1744, directed by architect Pedro Marín and later by Marcos Evangelios. The influx of worshippers made it necessary to build a new building, and it would be a century later, in 1893, that the works of the project by Tomás de Tallerie were completed.

In Cartagena, there is no Cathedral. Instead, there is the basilica of Our Lady of Charity. Its interior, dominated by the dome, resembles many spaces of the same artistic trend, which in turn are based on the Pantheon of Agrippa.

In the historic city of Cartagena the square is dominated by huge trees. There are many Roman sites in this old part of the city most impressive of which is a Roman Amphitheatre. Also impressive is the natural harbour which was a major port for the Romans and now a Spanish naval port.
